Research into food waste and people’s behaviour with food was carried out before the concept development phase.
Key Insights
- Around 50% of total UK food waste comes from our homes. [LOVE FOOD, hate waste]
- 27% of this overall UK household food waste is made up of fruit and vegetables. [Waste & Resources Actions Programme, 2012]
- Ethylene gas produced by ripening fruit causes surrounding fruits to decay much faster than usual.
Solution
A product which monitors the ethylene levels ripening fruit and adjusts the temperature accordingly, to preserve taste and prolong fruit life.
